BUILD AN ISLET OF CHILDHOOD

Children in Ukraine in Time of War

War brings harm and suffering. This everyone knows. However, the harm is not always physical. Many children in Ukraine, especially those evacuated from Russian-occupied areas, often do not have the opportunity to learn and spend time with their peers. It is this kind of contact that allows them to cope with the trauma and fear caused by war. We get involved in aid not only by providing humanitarian support or cars for the military, but also in less obvious, yet equally important ways. So now you too can get involved in helping children and young people in Ukraine.
Together we can help create safe places for children in Ukraine – Islets of Childhood.

What are Islets of Childhood?

We are raising funds to support and retrofit day centres for children and young people – safe islands of childhood. Places where they can all meet their peers, play and enjoy life. The main purpose of these facilities, however, is to enable children to learn and develop, to provide at least some degree of education in occupied Ukraine.
Importantly, this is not a temporary investment, meaningful and relevant only during military operations. These community centres – islands of childhood, safe places – currently in Russian-occupied territories – will remain even after the war is over and will continue to bring joy and smiles to children’s faces in addition to their obvious social, educational and psychological benefits.

What is education like in Ukraine?

Due to the ongoing hostilities, most schools provide remote learning, and children who do not have a laptop, tablet or at least access to the internet have no chance of education. And this is where Islets of Childhood comes to the rescue – places where learning and education for Ukrainian children is possible.
The local Ukrainian community, with the support of charities – such as the Be A Hero Foundation – undertake initiatives that help create a safe environment for children. Islets of Childhood includes play areas, organised educational activities and psychological support for children.

Child safety in occupied areas.

The situation is particularly difficult in the occupied Kharkiv region; it is the children in the Kharkiv area who are largely deprived of education. And the community centres we co-found with Ukrainian foundations are safe places to enable education in areas under Russian occupation.

What the Isle of Childhood looks like?

The rooms in the day care centres have been divided into sectors by age: a sector for pre-schoolers, primary schools and secondary schools. Depending on the situation in the village or town, mobile signal boosters or satellite internet, generators, charging stations, games, easels, laptops, tablets, poufs and furniture that can be quickly dismantled and taken away in the event of an emergency will be installed. The rooms themselves have been arranged in such a way that they can be quickly disassembled and transported to another location. Such day rooms are only found in areas away from the front, in villages with minimal risk of shelling. Our cooperation with foundations operating in Ukraine allows you to make a real impact for a better tomorrow.

How the Be A Hero Foundation supports education in Ukraine?

Together we can do more to realistically support the creation of places where Ukrainian children and young people will be provided with education and security.
The Be a Hero Foundation provides resources, technical support and humanitarian aid to the occupied territories – including making the necessary purchases to renovate specific sites and organising the furnishing of islets of childhood – so that children and young people have conditions in which they can access education and ultimately improve their living conditions.
